The Missing Link in Modern Construction: The End-User Experience Using 3P, Lean, and AI to Move from End-User Input to End-User Testing
Most builders would say they involve end-users in the design process, and many do. But talking with end-users about a design is very different from giving them the opportunity to experience and test it before it is built.
In this CILC Special Session, Dr. Darlene Dumont will explore how 3P (Production, Preparation, Process) takes end-user engagement to another level. Rather than relying primarily on drawings, renderings, meetings, or digital models, 3P brings end-users, designers, builders, and owners together to create full-scale, low-cost prototypes of proposed spaces. End-users can then walk through the environment, simulate their actual work, move equipment, test handoffs, and identify problems that may be difficult to recognize on paper or a screen.
The session will also explore how AI-supported scenario testing and digital-twin capabilities could extend this learning. AI can help teams generate and compare additional “what-if” scenarios such as changes in traffic patterns, staffing or occupancy, material movement, equipment placement, accessibility, safety, or future operational needs, before deciding what should be physically tested and validated with end-users.
Together, ERP, Lean, 3P, and AI can create a richer learning loop: ERP provides the digital backbone and project data; Lean helps identify waste and improve flow; 3P allows end-users to physically experience and test the proposed environment; and AI can expand the range of scenarios considered.
The goal is not simply to ask whether the end-user was involved, but whether the end-user was given the opportunity to actually experience and test the design.
Participants will learn:
- The difference between gathering end-user input and allowing end-users to physically experience and test a design
- How full-scale, low-cost prototypes, walkthroughs, and work simulations can reveal issues that drawings, meetings, and digital models may not
- How 3P brings the people closest to the work into the design process before costly decisions become difficult or impossible to change
- How poor layout and flow can contribute to unnecessary movement, safety risks, rework, delays, and long-term operational friction, costs, and workarounds
- How AI-supported scenario testing can expand the range of possibilities considered before physical prototyping
- How ERP, Lean, 3P, and AI can work together to strengthen the end-user experience
Who should attend:
Construction and project leaders, owners, architects and designers, operations and facilities leaders, Lean/continuous improvement practitioners, and anyone involved in designing environments where people and work must flow effectively.
